The garden and sculpture of Marie Sturwold Aull (1897-2002) at Carillon Historical Park dedicated by the Garden Club of Dayton, is a tribute to the legacy of this community activist, philanthropist and educator. Known as the “godmother of the environmental movement in the Miami Valley,” Marie’s passion for protecting our environment earned national recognition for her lifelong commitment to educating leaders and people of all ages about environmental concerns. She loved to share the importance of conservation and the joys of gardening. She founded Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm, located north of Dayton in Englewood, Ohio in 1957. Her gift of the Center and Farm to the Miami Valley became the model for the National Audubon Society centers. With her vision, this beautiful wildlife sanctuary was one of the Midwest’s first nature ventures, created to promote her beliefs of good land stewardship and to instill in all a sense of wonder for our natural world.
